Want your vote to count? Move to Wyoming

It’s an open secret that if you live in California your vote for president and senate don’t matter. Consider that California, with a population over 39 Million, gets the same number of senators as Wyoming with a population of less than 600,000. That means that in the Senate, 1 voter in Wyoming counts more than 68 voters in California. In the vote for president, the number is less skewed but still an affront to the idea of 1 person 1 vote. Wyoming’s 3 electoral college votes vs California’s 55 electoral college votes mean that in the vote for president, 1 voter in Wyoming counts more than 3.7 voters from California.

Even worse, California always votes overwhelmingly for the Democratic candidate, so your vote in that state doesn’t matter at all to effect who wins the Senate or who becomes president. In the most recent presidential election, California voted Democratic by a margin of over 5 Million(!!) votes. In the US system, however, any vote in a state beyond the 1 vote necessary to win the election is wasted, so the voices of those 5 Million excess democratic voters were effectively erased.

If only 125,000 of those 5 Million effectively disenfranchised voters in California had moved to Wyoming, the state would flip blue and Democrats would now control the US Senate. That’s just 2.5% of those excess voters from California. That’s all that’s standing in the way of Democrats being able to legislate and fix the problems facing this nation.

If you’re a Democrat and live in California, you should seriously consider moving to Wyoming. If you care about progressive causes like addressing health care, climate change, racial justice, or affordable university, you need your vote to count for something. You owe it to future generations to make your vote count.

Yellowstone in winter

Even without increasing your voting power by over 50x, Wyoming is an amazing place to live. Wyoming is home to some of the most stunning natural beauty anywhere on earth with amazing nature like Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. It’s also home to incredible skiing at Jackson Hole. If you love the beauty and freedom of the outdoors, Wyoming is the perfect place to live.

Furthermore, it’s easy to work remotely for a company on the west coast from Wyoming as its time zone is only 1 hour ahead of California and it’s a quick trip to get back if you need. Beyond all the above, rent and housing in Wyoming is orders of magnitude cheaper than in California. With more and more work moving online and more companies moving to remote-first work, there’s no reason to stay in an expensive, crowded city where your vote doesn’t count.

Move to Wyoming. You won’t regret it.
